Organic Lawns

Pesticide control has become a huge issue in many cities around North America and Canada. Scientists and the general public have finally agreed that the use of pesticides on lawns and fields have become a huge issue.

The use of pesticides has reduced as many farmers and gardeners are slowly realizing that the use of chemical fertilizers is no longer required.  There are alternatives to these harmful chemical and it is much easier than you think.

One of the main reason our grass turns into thatch or we start to get weeds is that we tend to cut the length of our lawn way too low. When you start to mow your lawn and cut it extremely low you are allowing dearth and weeds to creep in and take over your lawn. By cutting your grass when it is about 12 centimeters to the height of 8 centimeters will do a world of help.

You should also remember not to rake the grass clippings off the lawn as it is helping to add nutrients to your lawn. A mulching mower will help to cut the clippings into the soil. If you do not have a mulching mower just use the lawn mower and go over top of the grass clippings.

Water is also very essential in helping your organic lawn achieve its goals. Watering your lawn in the morning or at night when the extreme heat goes down also does wonders. If you are watering when it is extremely hot you are just wasting water and time as the heat is taking most of the water from the lawn.

Applying organic fertilizer to your lawn will also help your lawns growth and fertility. Just remember not to apply too many application of organic fertilizer as it may cause some damage to your lawn. Applying around 12 kg of organic fertilizer on each application should do just fine.

If you do find that you have a lot of thatch or yellow spots on your grass, at the beginning of summer you should aerate your lawn. Aerating your lawn is done by creating small holes in your grass to let better flow of air, water and nutrients to your roots. You can either rent an aeration device or do it manually. I only recommend the manual way if you have a small lawn.

If you are interested in seeing the best results for your lawn it can only be achieved with care and devotion. Once you start to see any problems try to address them immediately. If you are not able to then you will be doing a lot of work when summer comes along.
